The study concerns the renovation/ restoration of a traditional building in Chania, Crete. The basic requirement was that the design should be in keeping with the character and scale of the area.
The aim, was to transform the existing conventional floor plan of the old building into a new typology, which defines the respective functions in a way that contributes to the comfortable movement and communication between the renovated home’s spaces.
Thus, on the first floor, two bedrooms are created with an independent entrance, and a common meeting in a shared space, kitchen-living room, which leads to a terrace.
Respectful to the traditional element of the building, we decided to preserve some features, such as the masonry wall, the exposed stone around the openings, the wooden beamed ceilings and the old oven converted into a jacuzzi.
The style of the house moves in simple lines with obvious references to the Cretan element, giving the traditional style, without overshadowing the modern design approach of this restored real estate.
